Veggies are Coming
The week started off cool, with temperatures that reached 29 Monday night, but it’s turned out to be a very nice, mild, first week of spring! When you’re out and about on your day-to-day, be sure to take a second to stop and marvel in the beauty of the re-emergence of life, the buds on the trees, the songs of the spring birds, the flowers starting to bloom. This planet we live on really is something special, something beautiful, and it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture and get caught up in the minutia of the day. Be present with the rebirth of springtime, let it move you and motivate you to be the best you that you can possibly be!
My best bud, Matt (seen bearing the weight of it all above) decided to come down to hang out with me this week, and I’m eternally grateful because it’s been crazy busy! I’m slowly moving into my new residence, which is an animal all of it’s own. With Matt’s help, though, we’ve been able to get some electric fencing installed around the fields, got the future chicken condo shored up, planted squash, zucchini and cucumbers in the greenhouse, sowed some more arugula, lettuce and carrots, and planted broccoli, cauliflour, potatoes and onions (with the help of the wonderful Anne! Thank you!) I’m almost to the point where all my spring veggies are in the ground, and now it’s just a matter of nurturing their growth and getting them to your plates as quickly as I can! My plate, too. Some of this lettuce is starting to look quite delectable, if I do say so myself… I’ll be starting at the NoDa Farmers Market on Saturday, April 2nd, so all this is getting done not a moment too soon!
The chicks are growing before my very eyes. They are quite the escape artists, too, quickly realizing the capabilities of their newly feathered wings, they can already easily bound the cardboard perimeter I have set up around them. Time to come up with a better system… Only a few more weeks til they’re moving out of the house and into the great big world. Spread your wings, little birds!
Only one more week to get your share of the Street Fare Farm CSA and your chance to get weekly deliveries of boxes brimming with brassicas, swimming with salad greens, copious with kale, you get the idea. Find out more at https://streetfarefarm.com/2016-csa/.
Remember to take some time this week to commune with this Earth, our home. As Emerson said, “Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air’s salubrity!” You can’t go wrong living as such. Have a great week!
