Summer Veggies are Almost Here!
Well, here we are, another week behind us, full of kicking ass and taking names, am I right?! The weather has been pretty hot an muggy, it’s been feeling a little more like the middle of July than the middle of May! Alas, we are in an el nino year, where the extremes are that much more extreme-er (sp?), but hey, we’ve got to make the best of what we’ve got, right?
The spring veggies, i.e. the kales, collards, cabbages, chard, lettuce, broccoli and cauliflour are not huge fans of the unseasonably warm temperatures, but the summer veggies, i.e. the squash, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, watermelons and cantaloupes, they are absolutely loving it! I’ve got some little squashes and zucchinis coming on, and before you know it, I’ll have to be picking them gorgeous gourds every day! Unfortunately, however, the bugs love the warm weather just as much as summer veggies do. I am currently waging war with the cucumber beetle and the squash bug… Tenacious little suckers, they are.
BIG NEWS! Starting tomorrow, May 14, Street Fare Farm will be slinging veggies at TWO FARMER’S MARKETS! You heard right! You can now come get some of this tasty, local, USDA Certified Organic produce from my lovely assistant, Matt, at the NoDa Farmers Market from 8am to noon on the corner of 36th and Alexander St. in Charlotte, or you can come see my smiling mug at the Winecoff Market from 8am to noon at 518 Winecoff School Rd. in Concord! I’m truly excited for the opportunity to sell at the Winecoff Market, which as been in operation upwards of 25 years! Come on out for some lettuce, beets, peas, kale, collards, radishes, and carrots. Make you a salad, I dare you! I hope to see you there!
That being said, if you are my CSA customer, there is now the option of picking your box up at the Winecoff Market on Saturdays if that would be more convenient for you. If this is the case, drop me a line, shoot me a text, or send me an e-mail and I will be happy to accommodate. There are still CSA shares left, if you or someone you know would like to get your hands on some fresh veggies every week!
In other news, after being cooped up far to long and after far too many clucks of “give me liberty, or give me death!”, Matt and I have finally cleaned up the area outside the chicken’s coop, kicked open the door, cried havoc and let slip the chickens of war! They were a bit trepidatious that first day, but every day since I find them venturing further and further from their coop, scratching in the dirt and munching on the grass and weeds. I think they like it, though they are still reluctant to show any gratitude. They didn’t get me so much as a card for Mothers Day…
Speaking of which, I hope all the mothers out there had an absolutely wonderful Mother’s Day and were spoiled rotten by your own little chickens! I hate to tell you, but my mom really is the best mom in the world, and I love her to the moon and back!
I hope you all have a spectacular week, and accomplish every task you set out to accomplish, and I wish you health and wellness, every day! And remember what mom always told you, EAT YOUR VEGGIES!
