He who sows densely harvest scantily; he who sows lightly harvests plenty.
I don’t know whether it’s that I’ve just become so accustomed to the heat, or if maybe the sun isn’t hanging so high in the sky, but the past couple days have not felt so oppressively hot as it has, though the reading on the thermometer hasn’t changed much. There has been a slight breeze that has been helping to keep this humidity down, and I don’t know about you, but I swear I can smell the coming of autumn at the tail-end of those summer breezes whipping by…
Speaking of autumn, I am pleased to announce that yesterday evening, Matt and I planted over 3,000 cells for our first plantings in our fall successions, so I can officially declare that autumn has, in fact, officially begun! Well, over here at Street Fare Farm, at least! I’m super excited to be growing a lot of old favorites, as well as a bunch of stuff I’ve never tried before! Yesterday we sowed broccoli, cauliflower, kale, chard, cabbage, brussel sprouts, kohlrabi, tat soi, and pak choy. In a week, we’ll sow some more trays of transplants, and pretty much every week thereafter on through September. The first succession of carrots will be sown this week, as well as half-a-row of pinto beans. Just when things slow down, they pick back up!
I am also excited to announce that you can find Street Fare Farm produce at a number of restaurants in the Charlotte area! We have made deliveries of produce to Mama Ricottas, The Crepe Cellar, Heirloom Restaurant, 204 North, and the Charlotte Marriott City Center. Make your way to one of these fine establishments for a delicious meal featuring Street Fare Farm produce!
We hope to see you tomorrow at the farmer’s market! Matt will be at the NoDa Farmer’s Market from 8am to noon, and I will be at the Winecoff Market from 8am to noon. Tomorrow, for you and your taste buds, we will be bringing heirloom tomatoes, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, spaghetti squash, okra, onions, peppers and eggplant! Be there or be square!
Enrollment is open for the Street Fare Farm Fall CSA! Remember all the veggies I listed above that we’re getting started? Well, the CSA is the best way for you to get your hands on and mouths around these veggies, picked fresh for you every week! We have multiple pick-up locations and dates for your convenience. Head on over to https://streetfarefarm.com/2016-csa/ for more information and to print out your sign up form! You better sign up quick, though, as the number of shares are limited. Now, GO!
I hope you all had a wonderful week, and that this one coming up is even better! Remember to be grateful for the little things, like a light breeze on a hot day, or the delicious veggies on your plate! It’s easy to get wrapped up in the minutia that doesn’t bring you happiness, but much more fulfilling to focus on the small stuff that brings you joy. Take care!
